The Orchestra established after the Viennese model was first formed by musicians from the National Theatre then from the Opera House. It is an independent body governed by the president-conductor and the board. The has only had ten president-conductors: Ferenc Erkel, Sándor Erkel, István Kerner, Ernő Dohnányi, János Ferencsik, András Kórodi, Erik Bergel, Rico Saccani, György Győriványi Ráth, and since February 2014, Pinchas Steinberg. Apart from them, many outstanding conductors have played a role in the history of the Orchestra such as János Richter, Artur Nikisch, Sergio Failoni or Otto Klemperer. Hundreds of world premieres have been performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra, among them the first performance of Mahler’s First Symphony in 1889. In the recent years, the cooperation between the Orchestra and the Opera has got more active, thus ensuring artistic development. As part of the subscription construction, they perform 10 different concerts in every season.

The Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra is the oldest symphonic orchestra in Hungary. They gave their first concert on 20 November 1853 under the direction of Ferenc Erkel.
